Formality and etiquette to be followed in Budokan SA dojos
Bow on entry and leaving the dojo. This is to show that we respect the dojo where we train.
Bow when addressing or greeting a blackbelt or instructor. he will return your bow. This is to show respect for each other.
Bow when stepping on or off the actual training area.
Always remove shoes before walking on the training area. Never walk on the actual training area with your shoes on.
Always report to the instructor should you arrive late and seek permission to join the class. If you need to leave early approach the instructor and request permission. Never just join or leave a class without seeing the instructor first.
Your instructor will have a Japanese title equivalent to his rank or stature in Budokan SA. Find out what these are so you can address them correctly. If you are unable to remember you will find these in the section on tiles and ranks in Budokan SA.
There is a general greeting which is used in most styles of karate in South Africa – Os. This can be used for hello, goodbye and can be used to replace Hai or YES in the class when you understand an instruction.
Karate suits or Gi should always be clean and your nails should be kept short.
